Tony Kainauskas and Chris Hallinger Publish Memoirs of Life in Fairfield

Writers’ Voices introduces two first-time Fairfield authors this week. First up, the long-time proprietor of Fairfield’s sorely missed 21st Century Bookstore, Tony Kainauskas. Tony’s cousin Viktoras is known as the Father of the Raw Foods Movement, and Tony was intimately involved in the development of both that and the Transcendental Meditation movement. After retiring from a long career publishing and selling books, Tony found time to write his memoir of those days: “A Time of Innocence: My Personal Memories of Viktoras Kulvinskas and the Transcendental Meditation Community.” The title is very apt, and Tony speaks with fondness and clarity of those days that were life-changing for so many people.

Our second guest, Chris Hallinger, has twice found himself drawn to Fairfield, Iowa . First, as a student in the heyday of the somewhat controversial Parsons College, and then, much later, by Maharishi University of Management and the Transcendental Meditation movement. Throughout, Chris recorded his humorous impressions in witty essays which he has now collected in “Life on Earth.”
