In a two-episode special event, Writers’ Voices unveils the makings of The Wizard of Oz and its prequel, Wicked. Biographers Evan Schwartz and Carol de Giere give us the inside scoop. Evan Schwartz, author of Finding Oz: How L. Frank Baum Discovered the Great American Story, reveals both the spiritual teachings and life experiences that inspired The Wizard of Oz. Tune in tomorrow, March 19 at 1pm Central (kruufm.com). Involving a Swami from the 1893 World’s Fair and a real yellow brick road, this is a fascinating inside look into a creative work that has influenced most of our lives. You might even find yourself pondering, “Am I a good witch or a bad witch…or both?!”
Next Friday, March 26, Carol de Giere talks about her book, Defying Gravity: The Creative Career of Stephen Schwartz from Godspell to Wicked. Carol was inspired by The Artist’s Way to follow her dream as a freelance writer. This was her first book project. Along the way, she developed www.MusicalSchwartz.com, and a quarterly newsletter called The Schwartz Scene. With Carol’s extensive research, a Masters’ Degree in Writing and Bachelor of Science in Library and Information Science, this promises to be an excellent book. In this interview, we’ll complete our trip to the Land of Oz by asking her for the inside scoop on the creation of Wicked.

Safe food activist
Robyn O’Brien will speak to
Writers’ Voices this
Friday 3/5, 1pm and
Monday 3/8, 8am on
KRUU (http://www.kruufm.com).
We think you’ll be interested in her fearless book exposing some things about the food industry th at the “powers that be” would rather you not know. The Unhealthy Truth addresses questions like, “Why have American companies like Wal-Mart and Kraft Foods taken GMOs and many dangerous ingredients out of their European products, but left them in American products?” (That’s right. Kraft Macaroni and Cheese is safer to eat in England than it is in the U.S.!) This is a very sharp and conservative lady who was both slow to believe the truths she uncovered, and compelled by love for her children to keep searching, weighing, and revealing these facts about the food industry that we all need to know.
Robyn O’Brien, is being called “The Erin Brockovich of Food”. She is a conservative Texan with an MBA who used to roll her eyes when finicky parents talked about their children’s food allergies and special diets. Then her own children started having severe allergy problems, and she was catapulted into a research project that changed her life. In her book, The Unhealthy Truth, she lets us in on the secrets of GMO foods, the revolving door between the FDA and the food industry, and much more.

Tune in to kruufm.com this Friday, Jan. 29 at 1pm Central Time to help Writers’ Voices welcome Marisa Handler, author of Loyal to the Sky: Notes from an Activist. Marisa was born in apartheid South Africa, and moved to California as an adolescent. As a young woman, she spent time in Israel, India, Nepal, Ecuador, Peru, and all over the United States. This book gives us a look inside the social justice movement, with which she became involved as a natural outgrowth of her life experience.
Medea Benjamin, Cofounder of Global Exchange and CODEPINK, say, “Marisa Handler takes a brutally honest look at herself, the activist community, and the world. She writes with wit and beauty, preaches with passion and love. Loyal to the Sky is an affirmation that mortal humans, with all our foibles, can be powerful agents for change.”
This memoir has also received high praise from such well known authors as
Rabbi Michael Lerner, Michael Nagler, Christopher D. Cook, and Antonia Juhasz.
Please join us for what promises to be an intriguing interview with Chamaigne Montana and Caroline Kilbourn. Better yet, join the conversation! Add a comment here and suggest a question for us to ask Marisa!

I’m looking forward to this week’s interview with Michael Murphy, spiritual memoirist and animal communicator.
His memoir is probably the easiest to read memoir I’ve ever read, because the memoir itself is an example of a writing technique he teaches where you use seminal experiences to discover your core beliefs. Each chapter is titled with an insight about life, and the short 2-3 page chapter describes the event that first brought the insight home. The chapters are in roughly chronological order, so the book as a whole also reads like a smooth life story.
I love memoirs because I hope to write one myself one day. This will be a particularly good interview for aspiring memoirists to listen to because it teaches this memoir writing technique.
We’ll also be talking with Michael about his Animal Communication book. This book tells the story of the classes he went through, and it feels almost as if you are there with them, taking the class. Michael was innovative in incorporating an intuitive writing practice that he learned in some of his Shamanic studies. Once again, this book acts as a teacher of specific writing exercises, in addition to the subject matter of the book.
Michael has a degree in writing and has taught privately and at the college level for many years.
So, this is your chance to suggest questions for us to ask Michael this Friday, January 22, at 1pm Central! What would you ask an Animal Communicator?
