Professor, scientist, researcher, engineer, and author Pablo Ribeiro Dias, PhD, joins Writer’s Voices to present his important new book, Climate Changed: The Science of Sustainability and How Each of Us Can Do Our Part. In this practical guide, he provides insightful information about climate change, pollution, and other challenges facing our planet, helping readers understand the issues and encouraging them to take meaningful, everyday actions. For Dias, his interest in the environment grew while he was in school, when his concerns deepened and he became increasingly troubled that the planet was moving in the wrong direction. “Being unsustainable was the feeling that I had. So in school, I was very interested in the topic of sustainability… and then when I finished high school, I really liked math, chemistry, physics… so I decided to do engineering because of that affinity with these subjects and within the engineering degree I then gravitated towards the environmental side of things which is the recycling, the idea around energy, inputs, how can we maximize resources, what are the things that can be done around that specific area.”

While he initially set out to write Climate Changed in a textbook style for his students, he realized it would make a bigger impact if he wrote it for a wider audience so that anyone could use it to take steps towards a greener future. According to Dias, people do not have to start with drastic measures in order to improve the planet’s health. “Everytime you put things towards a recycling bin you’re helping already because the separation process is one of the things that takes a lot of energy, effort, money at the end of the process, so if you can do it ahead of the process, it helps…” He also added that people can also simply volunteer their time or donate to the organizations that truly bring about change. “You can donate your time to causes or to groups that are already doing the movements that you want to support, but you can also donate money… these people need support, these people need money to be able to do the things they need to be able to do…”

You do need to cut back on a few things if you live in a very affluent country or you live a very rich lifestyle, yes, you will need to cut back on a few things, but it’s not as bad as you think.”

We are the first generation to feel the impact of climate change, and the last generation that can do something about it.”
