Ellen Hopkins on writing for young adults “I write about those things because…those kids want to see themselves in books..they want to know people care enough to write about those things.” About her verse novel -The You I’ve Never Known. “I wanna create stories and characters that resonate with all kinds of readers, including kids that are struggling with their sexual identity.” (I want) “to bring poetry into this kind of different landscape, encourage young people to read it and to look at it differently.”
Poetry should be something that… you know exactly where you are when you’re reading it…a space, a landscape.
A poem should not mean, but be.
