Julie Berry, her latest historical fiction novel – Lovely War ” We have this tendency to look at the past as though it’s not applicable to us; because they had weird hair styles and weird clothes and had outmoded technology; and even some goofy opinions and tastes, by our own measure. That therefore they weren’t really real, they weren’t really alive.. they weren’t really like us in any essential way.
I hope that good historical fiction will serve to help people understand that we’re not the pinnacle of human evolution. We are really part of something much larger, something just as human as us that came before and will extend after.
If you live a good honorable life, when you get older, you can think back and you can enjoy it a second time.
