I dream of Popo, a richly illustrated children’s book, shares it’s creators childhood immigrant experiences.
It’s author, Livia Blackburn immigrated from Taiwan with her family at age five. The illustrator, Julia Kuo’s family immigrated from Taiwan before she was born, Both of them leaving their culture and extended families behind. “There are a lot of little things in the book, house slippers by the door…or in the kitchen scene, there’s like a huge cleaver on the kitchen table and also a twenty pound bag of rice on the floor…these are elements that are shared among all Taiwanese families, no matter where they are in the world.”

Create the type of work that you would want to be hired for or the stories that you would want to illustrate. The people that hire you may not necessarily be artists themselves; and so it really just helps to be able to see those concrete examples. Like if you love dinosaurs, them make sure your portfolio is full of them. -Julia Kuo

I want you to all just stop and think a minute – Grand – Mother. Grand – Father. Grand – Children. Those words. My favorite thing to do at church when I see one of my friends holding a grandchild is to walk up and say ‘ You know what grandchildren are? And they say “no” and I’ll say ‘God’s gift to us for getting old.’
