Jonathan Lethem joins Writers Voices for a conversation on writing and his new book of essays – More Alive and Less Lonely. On what got him started writing, ” I was participating in a conversation that enthralled me, as a reader, and I wanted to talk back to it….On the whole (writing) is an art form that isn’t made up of prodigies, the way say, Mozart or a math or science prodigy. It usually takes some seasoning for people to become interesting enough to write books that you’d want to read; and that was true with me,”

I had some combination of vanity and willfulness that just made (me) certain that this was what I was going to do. That I just basically had to shake the world by the collar until they noticed and agreed…that it was going make room for my books on the shelves.

Writing means sharing, it’s part of the human condition to want to share things, thoughts, ideas and opinions.
