Tami Charles talks about her new young adult novel – Muted – and why she became a writer.
“It was through my teaching that I rediscovered my love of writing and my continued passion for books ” “it was my students who said, because we were writing stories together, .., Miss Charles you should really think about becoming an author. And so I did,.. I went from wanna-be Beyoncé, to teacher to now, author.
“Of course I enjoyed performing but I’m the daughter of a teacher,…she constantly fed me books .. so I always wanted to be an author. I just didn’t think that I could.”
“There’s a lot more diverse books available now for today’s’ children, than I found available when I was a child. Seeing that and seeing that level of representation, is also what sparked my interest. ‘Oh, Maybe there is a space for me.'”

I think reading about cultures outside of our own. helps us build understanding and empathy,

Rather than love, than money, than fame, give me truth.
