Lori McMullen grew up in Florida. Her novel – Among the Beautiful Beasts – tells the story of the early life of Everglades advocate Marjory Stoneman Douglas. “Anybody who grew up in south Florida and went through the public school system … knows the name of Marjory Stoneman Douglas.” She is kind of a fixture in south Florida history, but very little is known widely, about her earlier life and what led her to become an activist and care so passionately about the Everglades”
Why did she choose this topic?
“When I was thinking, okay I’m gonna try to write a novel I realized that it had to take place in Florida and it had to be a novel where the setting was as vibrant and alive as any of the characters in it. So once I came to that conclusion it wasn’t a far leap to find Marjorie. “

One of the things I loved about Law school was understanding the power of language, and the nuance of language and how a tiny little word or a comma can affect the interpretation of a very significant law.
We all have a past, family history and our own mistakes and regrets; we also have a future, how many days are left we don’t know, Try to enjoy life where we are in time.
