in Memoir, Non-fiction by
Carol Ann Davis’ new book, “The Nail in the Tree: Essays on Art, Violence and Childhood” is as much a memoir of hope as it is of loss. She and her family were relative newcomers to Newtown, CT when the Sandy Hook shooting tragedy shocked our nation. By a quirk of school zoning, her young sons went to a different school, further from their home than Sandy Hook. In this book, Davis explores the impact of the trauma on her sons and their community, and looks at artistic and literary responses to violence over the centuries. In this conversation, we talk about the healing power of writing.

The way I think about writing – I’m always wanting to be led deeper into something. I’m not looking to tell or explain. I’m looking to explore what’s opening to me, because I’m letting go all the time.
