“How do you get people to listen to a story tha, I think, we are socialized to ignore?” Sandy Allen talks about her memoir of her uncle’s life – A Kind of Mirraculas Paradise. – A True Story about Schizophrenia. “I really wanted people to be able to hear just what Bob had gone through and to sort of see it from his side…. to create a text that would be more accessible.; that more kinds of people would be able to walk into this story and walk out the other side with their heads a little bit changed.

I was always thinking ,’What’s the readers experience here? Am I, as a writer, working hard enough to keep the reader around?’

I just wish we could all have empathy towards someone with mental illness, because it could happen to anyone.
