in Mystery & Suspense by
In her fifth published novel, Behind These Four Walls, critically-acclaimed, #1 Amazon bestselling author Yasmin Angoe delivers a gripping mystery suspense centered around a young woman named Isla Thorne, who sets out to uncover the truth behind her friend’s disappearance ten years earlier. Set first in Los Angeles, then Virginia, Isla starts her search at the last place her friend Eden was seen, the Corrigan mansion, home to the ultra-wealthy Corrigan family. Under the guise of an aspiring journalist, Isla is able to gain access into the family’s home to begin her investigation. As Angoe describes her protagnist, “[Isla is] one of those characters that pulls it up by the bootstrap… She hasn’t had the easiest childhood growing up, and so that has shaped who she has become as an adult, and how she’s resourceful, and how she’s… world savvy. She knows how to read people and kind of figure out what it is that she needs to achieve whatever goals that she wants… she definitely knows how to get information that she needs and then becomes more refined as a mystery investigator when she goes to look for her disappeared friend, her missing friend.”

Shaped by her family’s immigrant experience, Angoe’s writing often reflects her African-American culture and Ghanaian heritage. Many of her characters are African-American, and at times, she has introduced a character with a Ghanaian background into her stories as well. She explained, “Just because I like all these different types of stories and sometimes I don’t necessarily see myself in those stories, not that I necessarily have to, but sometimes it’s just fun… I’m proud of my culture and have always been but didn’t know quite how to show my pride, and so in my books is where I show my pride and my culture, even if it’s just this little snippet. There’s always something in there, mostly food because I just really love food, but there’s always something that will be Ghanaian in my books.”

Once I’ve got the story in my head, honestly I can type it up, I can write it really quickly because it kind of just comes out.” -regarding her writing process

When I write, I try to think back to what I was afraid of or what was scary to me, and try to put those feelings into books.”
