Nancy Burke is a successful writer of short stories, plays, a nonfiction book and a young adult novel. Her latest project, “Only the Women Are Burning” was an ember in her mind for many years, and was a challenge to write because of the complexity of the story, the research required, and the many genres it crosses. Although categorized as domestic women’s fiction, it incorporates elements of mystery and suspense, science fiction, magical realism, and feminist literature. Because it didn’t quite “fit in”, the book was rejected multiple times until it found a perfect home with a unique publisher. Apprentice House Press is run by faculty and students at Loyola University in Baltimore, as part of an English department concentration in publishing.
As you might expect with so much complexity to the book, our conversation with Nancy covers a lot of ground.

It took a while for the book to find its form that it finally found its way to publication in. When I got the idea, it started me on this journey of reflection about all the women I know.

There may be a great fire in our soul, yet no one ever comes to warm himself by it, and the passersby see only a wisp of smoke.
