Gary Kelley talks about why he created his graphic novel – Moon of the Snow Blind, ”
“My uncle ..taught me to draw, Gene Kelley, had a lot of books in his house, which was not far from where I was, growing up in Algona. Some of those books kind of got me attracted to the history, to the stories and the culture of the Native Americans… That’s what really pulled me into this…It’s an interesting story, it’s a dark story, but it’s interesting. It’s some of the more dramatic Iowa history that I’ve ever been acquainted with but I knew that it’s hardly ever been told from both sides. As I wrote on the first page of the graphic novel – sort of a two sides to every story because I did not want to tell it purely from the settlers…side of the story.”

“The war did not spring up here in our land, The war was brought upon us by followers of the Great White Father. who came to take our land,

Chief Joseph – Quoted in Moon of the Snow Blind

There are two sides to every story, You know, that is something we should really remember. Because, although when you are involved in something you think your side is ‘the’ side: but there really are two sides to every story,
