Charlie Holmberg speaks to us about her fantasy book, Star Mother, her 15th published novel. “The idea behind Star Mother is it has its own god folklore and stars are godlings and they are the batteries of the universe but they can only be born from the sun god and a mortal mother and the mortal mother always perishes in the act and so this story follows Ceris Wenden… and she volunteers to become a star mother but she doesn’t die, and so it’s like a whole thing like why didn’t she die? When she’s returned back home she’s 700 years in the future and so everybody she knew is gone and so it’s a journey of her trying to find her sister’s descendants and a journey of motherhood and a lot of secret things.”

During this spirited discussion, Charlie goes on to talk about her passion for writing, her hobby as a song writer, and her personal difficulties in 2019. She remarked, “It’s ironic that this book revolves so much around light because it helped pull me out of the dark place. I’d gotten into the habit of running before walking and stretching too thin and it broke for me a bit in 2019.”

Her sequel to this novel is Star Father, which is available now. She is currently working on a historical novella for charity.

I always just felt like if I keep trying, I’m going to make it. Like, cause that’s how America works.
