“The book title: It’s called The Field House ; A Writer’s Life Lost and Found on an Island in Maine. The Field House is the name of Rachel Field’s summer house. That is what it has been called for fifty years by Sutton Islanders. She called it – The Playhouse – because she used money from her plays to buy it… It inspired a lot of her most successful writing of all kinds. My husband and I bought that very house in 1994.” And so began Robin Clifford Wood’s obsession with the life of Rachel Field.
“Rachel Field was the first woman to win a Newbery Award for children’s literature….she also won the national book award for novels… three of them were made into films and one of them was nominated for best picture…She finished her life in Hollywood. Disney chose her to write the lyrics for the Ave Maria segment in Fantasia. One of her poems called – Prayer for a Child – won the Caldecott Medal after Rachel died.”

I felt like Rachel was almost reaching out to me. It became like a calling, I was like a woman obsessed.

I use to think I had ambition, but now I’m not so sure. It may have only been discontent, they’re easily confused.
